100 things about me: My miffs, irks and intrigues.
This list is not complete. As I discover more about myself everyday, I keep adding ...
1/20/2004
1. My name Sxxxxx means "Golden" in Hindi. Thats why I am the Golden Girl - GG. I was named by my paternal grandmother and the first four letters of my name are the same as hers.
2. I am born on 24th of October at a MH (Military Hospital) in Youl. Its a small hill station in Himachal Pradesh (near Dharmshala). Ma tells me there was a terrible storm on the night I was born.
3. I am a typical Scorpio.. Intense, High-maintenance, passionate and very possessive. I like to keep what I have.
4. I have a crazy family (includes tootsie - our doggie too). Both my parents are very amusing and slightly eccentric (eccentricity runs in my family, it is just the degrees that differ). My bro is totally clueless about life and tootoo thinks of nothing else but food. But we make a great family together.
5. My da is a Brigadier (Indian army), an armchair communist, an eternal optimist and a hopeless romantic, and the complete opposite of my mother, who's black humour puts Kurt Vonnegut to shame.
6. I have always been daddy's little girl. He is my inspiration. I put him on a pedistral and judge every man who comes in my life against him. I love listening to his voice as he tells old army and war stories.
7. My mother is the fun person in our family as well as being very talented and a total and natural aesthete. She is also a snob, but doesnt admit to being one. She is also my best friend and we fight and bicker a lot.
8. My brother is the comic in the family. He also has a heart of gold although he pretends otherwise. I have seen him gently wrap a little pup in a sheet and carry it to its mom in the middle of a cold Delhi winter nite.
9. Tootsie is a lasa apso and I absolutely adore him. No matter how bad my day is going, he's got that cute little expression and that always makes everything all better. Even when he was acting up, he's still an adorable little bugger and he's always there for me.. Beats any guy, any day!!
10. I am an army brat and love the army life. We loved to pack our stuff every 2 years and moving to a new place.
11. I have done my Masters in Business Administration (MBA), though I'm not sure how. I partied through a major part of my post-graduation. As Mark Twain said, "I have never let my schooling interfere with my education."
12. I am an MBA by qualification and profession and hence, capitalism should have been my leaning. That is not so. I am overtly critical of the way countries and governments and huge corporations trod over the sentiments of individuals and the underprivileged using concepts like copyrights, development, national security, IP and patriotism as covers.
13. I left home at age 16. I studied at a boarding school for 6 years and never really adjusted to home when I got back. I had gotten too independent.
14. I am a staunch environmentalist. I do think it's a bad thing not to love and respect the earth and *all* her creatures. They need our protection. I love tigers, I think they're the most beautiful and majestic animal in the wild and I wish there was something I could do to stop the awful poaching that's threatening to make them extinct. People kill them and use their livers or spleens or something as an aphrodisiac. It's an animal's internal organ, for goodness sake!!! It's not gonna do anything for your sex life!! Read a book or watch "porn".
15. I am by nature a liberal and a secularist. I hardly ever get passionate about issues that relate to religion or caste or faith or belief. I am, what right-wingers in India regularly call, a pseudo-secularist or a pseudo-intellectual.
16. I am a pacifist, and faced with a situation tending to get out of control, would elect to “lose the argument" for the sake of sanity. "Fine, whatever!"
17. I truly love India. I think we are great country with our rich heritage, culture and people. I never want to settle anywhere else other than India. However, I cannot go overboard in my praise of India because for all its strengths and greatnesses, we still have many flaws and evils that we need to address.
18. I am disillusioned at various phenomenon that plague our world and my country. The rise of religious fundamentalism, the increasing schisms between various castes in India, crimes against women, growing poverty, population and politicians.
19. I am pretty direct. I do not hesitate in calling a spade, a spade. Even though honesty is an admired virtue, there are very few who truly appreciate it. I do wish I had more tact and diplomacy.
20. I have a great memory. I can recall and quote conversations verbatim days after the fact. When people don’t think I am paying attention and challenge me by saying "What did I say?" they are usually amazed when I recite the conversation.
21. I get jealous very easily. I hate this about myself.
22. I hate to lose. If we play a game together, it is best to let me win.
23. I admire and respect people who can argue logically, without getting petty or personal. I also admire people who can admit defeat graciously when they lose an argument fair and square. I admire people who hear out other arguments before stating their own, instead of blindly sticking to a stand. I hope to be such a person myself.
24. I cannot stand idiots. I cannot tolerate stupidity almost always, except when stupidity comes in a "package deal" along with love and caring. Love and caring neutralize stupidity :-)
25. I'm a feminist, not like a wild, radical feminist. To me, it's really about choices, choices that many people have been denied for no valid reason in the past. I wish everyone would remember that we're all more alike than we are different.
26. I love to eat and cook (but I cook only for people I like). I love all kinds of food, especially all Spicy food! My mom is a great cook, and hopefully I have her culinary talents in the kitchen. Everyone who's ever tasted my food has told me so. I think so too.
27. I turned vegetarian a couple of years back. My favorites: Food is Rajma chawal, Fruit: Mango, ice cream dessert is DBC - Death-by-Chocolate.
28. I am very accident prone. I sometimes just fall walking on a plain road and I always end up searing myself whenever I enter the kitchen.
29. I had a bad accident about five years back. I couldn't walk for about a year. During my recovery, I used to watch Travelers on Discovery Channel and dream about going to all those exotic places. It helped me a lot.
30. I love kids, especially little girls, but I want a baby boy of my own. I love to listen to children giggling. Its so carefree. I've tried very hard to hang on to some of my childlike qualities... playfulness, idealism, wonder.
31. I have never been good with money and spend way too much. I am also bad with using the cellphone and run up huge bills. My dad hit the roof when my bill reached 24K once.
32. I think and do everything very passionately. There are no "in-betweens" for me. Either I love something or I hate it.
33. My clothing of choice is my pajamas. I refuse to wear "real" clothes on weekends. Otherwise, I live in jeans and t-shirts. I think saris are very sexy but dont know how to tie one.
34. I think the sexist feature on a guy are his hands and of course the smile. I love to watch people work with their hands. I would like my prince charming (when he does come!) to treat others as he would treat me. You know how a person is intrinsically by the way he treats his parents, sister, friends and other girls.
35. I have a good ability to make people laugh, and unfortunately these people are always laughing at me, but it is all in good fun. I am always the "queen bee" at any party or gathering.
36. I believe in God but hate the narrow views people have about religion. I have been going to the Infant Jesus church religiously every Thursday for the last 10 years and Pir baba's mazar on every Friday. I know some of my friends dont like it but I care two hoots.
37. I am a destiny's child and I have been blessed. My prayers always come true. Even the smallest and trivialist of things. My friends usually ask me to pray for them. GetAFix says "If you had prayed for me, I would have been a king by now but you dont".
38. I have always had suicidal thoughts. I infact attempted it once. Slashed my wrist! Still carry the scars - both physically and mentally!
39. I am a workoholic. Work is my balm. Keeps my mind ticking!!! Keeps me ticking! I dont think I can ever be just a "house wife" (or to be politically correct "a home maker". Nothing wrong with those who are!! Mom is and she is "the best mom". It's just I dont think I will be happy doing just that. May be when I have my baby, I will think differently.
40. I am very good at my work. I have got my promotions very soon and infact at 23, I was the youngest Manager in my company and at 25, I was part of the Management Committee. There are many people who are jealous of my success and play politics. I hate that side of my success where I have to watch my back all the time.
41. I have a really bad temper. It used to be a lot worse and I really try to control it but haven't been as successful as I would have liked to be.
42. I love watching movies and sitcoms. My all-time favourite TV show is Friends. Love Monica. I think I am bit like her. Obsessive and compulsive. I also like Just Shoot me, Dharma and Greg, Drew Carrey Show, MTV Bakra, ToolTime and Fraser.
43. I love music, it's my main reason for living. My secret wish is to be a rockstar but I can't carry a tune. I'm tone deaf! I just love Bryan Adams. His voice still gives me goose bumps.
44. I hate pretenious people .... People who aren't what they say they are.. I can't stand a person who lies about themself so that they look better. I mean, grr you're going to find out the truth sooner or later, why not just find it out now?
45. I love watching the sun set. It invigorates me. I also love looking at a full moon. I think it is terribly romantic watching the moon with that someone special.. walking hand-in-hand on the beach. I also love watching the rain fall and the rainbow that comes after it. Nature is pretty amazing.
46. I have a happy laugh. I laugh at my own jokes and think I have a great sense of humour. I used to laugh a lot with my Dad and brother and do so even now whenever I get the chance.
47. I am a very sensitive person and comments from people, whether close to me or not, always affect me. I can be the most weak person at times and the most strong at other times.
48. Friends say I am good listener (even when nothing is said). I think a lot of people forget how important it is to listen when there are no words being spoken. Hearts can hear too. That's why dogs and kids can always tell when you're sad and they give you a little extra love.
49. I can always express myself better through the written word than through speaking. I still like to hand write (its a dead skill in the PC e-world) and use to write long mails to my grandmom (she is the only one who had the patience to read my letters) but now even that has stopped. (She is no more..)
50. One day I want to leave the city and live in the country side. I want to have a home full of children and dogs.. like a huge farm house with meadows and horses to ride on and plenty of space to plant my flowers and a river flowing nearby.
51. I get a little frustrated now and then. I wallow sometimes. I deserve it. I'm a very happy person overall. I smile a lot, it makes me feel even happier.
52. I am a very physical person and like hugging or touching people that I really like.
53. I am not at all a morning person and do most of my work at night.
54. I love water (pool/sea/river anything will do) and love to swim. My dream is swim and play with the dolphins one day.
55. I fear strangers, primarily because I don't know how & what to talk with them... Never been a good conversationalist! I don't like small talk that's merely used to fill silence. It's pointless, awkward, and embarrassing to me.
56. I love being an auntie. I have 6 nephews and 5 nieces (ranging from ages 25 yrs down to 9 mos). All the kids bully me and make fun of my hindi accent.
57. I am extremely scared of darkness and need to have a light on at all times.
58. I always sleep with a pillow beside me and hugging "King Kong" (aka KK, my old n tattered Gorilla), unless I’m sleeping next to someone.
59. I believe in ghosts— and whenever scared, I feel my grandpa rubbing my back gesturing it is ok. I think of my grandpa as my guardian angel. He passes away when I was 14.
60. I feel I have been placed anachronistically on this earth as I like all things old- historic buildings, vintage cars, antique furniture, old music, trams, cobbled streets. I would love to live in a historic structure- a cute little Tudor or Craftsman cottage.
61. I once ran away from home. To the back yard. No one missed me. I returned home three hours later because I was bored.
62. I am laziness personified, yet if something interests me, I can put in my bit of effort... even extra...
63. I cannot stand the taste of alcohol, even beer is extremely bitter for me. This remains the primary reason why I don't drink, otherwise I could take up moderate drinking any day.
64. I am a compulsive thinker. Never been able to rest my mind even for a millisecond when I'm awake…
65. I am a fatalist and believe that things go on the way they do because they are meant to be that way. I also believe in happiness of every person, irrespective of the means of achieving them.
66. If I start reading a good book, I can't stop until I've finished it, so I have to schedule time for it. Also when I'm reading, I get so involved in the story, the house could fall down around me and I probably wouldn't know it.
